Running a tool someone shared with you

A colleague shared a Button tool with you: a web form that runs their script on their computer, so you can run it yourself whenever you need it. You don't install anything and you don't pay.

Open your invite

Open the link in the invite email. It takes you to the tool's page on button.bitgate.dev. Bookmark that page to come back to it later.

Sign in with Google or a one-time email code, using the address the invite was sent to. Your colleague can revoke your access or give it an end date.

Fill in the form and press Run

The page shows the inputs the program needs: text, numbers, yes/no, choices from a list, or files.

  • Values you type can't start with -, so negative numbers won't work.
  • Each file field takes one file of up to 25 MB; a run takes up to 8 files and 100 MB in total.

When you press Run, your values and files go through Button's servers to your colleague's computer, where the program runs for up to 30 minutes. Closing the tab doesn't stop it, so you can come back to the page for the results. You can also cancel a run you started.

Ready, Busy and Offline

The program runs on your colleague's computer, so that computer has to be on and online. The tool page shows its status:

  • Ready: online, and you can start a run.
  • Busy: running a job right now. It runs one at a time.
  • Offline: not connected.

Nothing is queued. If the page says Busy or Offline, try again when it shows Ready.

Download your results

When the program finishes successfully, the files it produced show up on the page as downloads. They stay available for 7 days, then they're deleted. The files you uploaded are deleted 24 hours after the run ends. You only see your own runs, not other people's.

If the tool changed

When your colleague changes the tool, Button asks you to confirm the new version before you run it again.

What it costs you

Nothing. People who are invited never pay; your colleague's plan covers the runs and the file transfer.
